Drawing For Absolute Beginners
This course is for complete beginners; it’s for you if you haven’t drawn since you were a child, if you think it’s impossible for you, if you believe you don’t have a ‘creative bone in your body’ (I’ve heard that one many times!) This is the voice of your left hemisphere, whose job is to keep you safe by avoiding things you may fail at. I show you how to change your perception of failure and to think of it as an intrinsic and powerfully beneficial part of the learning process. This course is for you if drawing is something you’ve always dreamed about but have never had the opportunity. It’s for you, if you’ve had some experience but lack direction or would like to extend your skills.
There is no right or wrong way to draw when you’re learning, every drawing is a valid and valuable part of the process. Every drawing you do, no matter how ‘good’ or ‘bad’, creates new brain circuitry which enables the next step. I support and encourage you and give you the information that enables you to take that step.
I show you how to consciously activate your right hemisphere, which being primarily visual and spatial, is ideally equipped for drawing. Everyone unconsciously activates their right hemisphere. Every time your eye is attracted to a glorious sunset, a beautiful flower, a bird soaring high above you, when you pat your cat or dog, take your child or loved one in your arms, listen to music, dance – you activate the deep, silent reservoir of your unconscious mind; your right hemisphere.
In this workshop you discover the fundamental drawing techniques that enable you to draw in line. I show you how to see and record the visual information pertaining to pieces of fruit, shells and leaves, your hand and as part of the process you learn how to draw in proportion. This course enables you to do line drawings for pleasure whenever you feel like it and to create hand drawn cards for friends. It gets you started.
I teach simple mindfulness techniques to help you relax, optimise the process and address any concerns that may arise from your left hemisphere. Mindfulness, like drawing, activates the right hemisphere of your brain.
